Closed - End Mutual Funds !

  • Closed-End Mutual Fund Schemes have fixed number of units or shares offered by an investment company through an Intial Public Offering.
  • These funds are traded on stock exchange just like individual stocks.
  • These funds have a fixed maturity period. So, investors are not allowed to sell or redeem before maturity date. Hence, a stable asset is avalable to the Fund Manager for making strategies without the worry of inflow and outflow. Lock-in-period of this investment also protects the interest of the long term investors.
  • These funds are bought by the investors as lumpsum investments during launch of NFO (New Fund Offered). Hence, the advantages to invest in the form of Systematic Investment Plan ( SIP) are not available in these funds.
  • No track record is available for this type of fund. So, investors are compelled to depend on the capability of Fund Manager only.

Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGB) SGB is a paper gold investment scheme launched by RBI without transaction of physical gold. SBG offers better option of investment in comparison to buying physical gold in respect of risk and storage charges of physical gold. SGB is free from vital issues like making charges and purity in respect of physical gold.  Investment is locked for long term. Tenure is for eight years. Investors are assured to get the market value of gold at the time of redemption. Minimum investment required is one gram of paper gold. Maxium investment can be four kg of paper gold per year. Return from investment during final redemption is tax-free. Additional 2.5% of periodic interest of invested amount is assured annually and this interest is taxable.
